First Terrifying Bird Box Trailer Features Sandra Bullock as a Mother Fighting for Survival

The first trailer for the Netflix original Bird Box is out, and it is some scary stuff! A heads up: There are some jumps scares in the trailer, so turn down the volume or skip it altogether if that’s not your kind of thing.

The team behind Bird Box is extremely promising: The Night Manager‘s Susanne Bier directed the film, and Arrival‘s Eric Heisserer wrote it based off the 2014 novel by Josh Malerman. The film was first announced last year, and reading about this post-apocalyptic terror could not have prepared me for seeing what it would actually look like on film—or, rather, what it doesn’t look like. The synopsis reads:

“When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they’ll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded. Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock leads an all-star cast that includes Trevante Rhodes, with Sarah Paulson, and John Malkovich in #BirdBox, a compelling new thriller from Academy Award® winner Susanne Bier.”

There is going to be so much dread and silent terror in this movie, although that bit with the parking sensors came across a bit comical because of how predictable it felt. (And was that product placement?) Either way, horror trailer have to deal with the challenge of putting together scenes without much context but with lots of tone and atmosphere.

Bird Box is not an October scary movie, but comes to Netflix December 21, 2018. Are you going to check it out?
