The world needs a little magic every now and then, especially now that the news is a 24/7 cycle of doom, gloom, and impending apocalypses. Thankfully, Disney has a bit of a cure for your Tuesday grumpiness with their “special look” (see: trailer) at Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Rather than simply rebooting the beloved classic, director Rob Marshall has created a sequel in which Mary Poppins returns to the life of the Banks family after the family suffers a loss.

Both Michael and Jane, played in this film by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer, have grown up, and Michael has three children of his own. When Mary Poppins arrives at their door, she briskly announces that she’s here to take care of the Banks children; when one of Michael’s children pipes up to ask if she means them, she says, “You too.” Just as Mary helped the Banks family’s patriarch find his way again in the original, it seems as though she’s here to save the day once more and restore hope to a family that has lost one of their own.

The majority of the minute-long “special look” is spent previewing one of the songs, which looks to take place during an underwater bath-time sequence. We get a glimpse of several other musical numbers, including another animated sequence, a dance with Miranda and his fellow lamplighters, and Dick Van Dyke showing off his moves. The film looks beautifully shot and well animated, with an exceptional cast. (I personally cannot wait for that Mamma Mia reunion with Meryl Streep and Colin Firth).

We might not have a very Star Wars holiday season this year for the first time in a while, but Disney is still coming for that sweet box office crown. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments!
