Why Some Celebrities Are Wearing Orange Flag Pins on the Oscars Red Carpet

Recommended Videos

According to a few stylists who spoke to PEOPLE, a number of stars on the Oscars red carpet will be wearing Wear Orange to Prevent Gun Violence pins to support Everytown for Gun Safety, a grassroots gun control advocacy group which was founded when Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America joined forces in 2013.

As the number of mass shootings, gun suicides, and other gun deaths in the United States continues to increase, and as Congress continues to do nothing to protect everyday Americans, the grassroots movement for gun control has gotten stronger and stronger. Most recently, the school shooting survivors from Florida have demanded change after watching what happened to their classmates.

A number of prominent actors, actresses, and other celebrities have joined this call for sensible gun legislation. For example, actresses like Julianne Moore and Emma Stone have appeared in Everytown PSAs. Meanwhile, Amal and George Clooney have donated $500,000 to the March for Our Lives, an event scheduled for March 24th in Washington D.C. where marchers will “demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues.” In a joint statement, the Clooneys said that they were “so inspired by the courage and eloquence” of the students, and so, “in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it.” Oprah Winfrey then matched their donation.

If you’d like to buy your own pins to support Everytown for Gun Safety, you can find them in their shop.
