Amal and George Clooney Step Up in Support of Parkland Students and the “March for Our Lives”

Yesterday, I wrote about the inspiring and sadly necessary gun control activism being undertaken by the teens at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, emphasizing the fact that adults need to step in and show them that they’re not alone. Amal and George Clooney have stepped up to do just that.

The couple has pledged $500,000 to underwrite the students’ “March for Our Lives,” which will be taking place on March 24th in Washington D.C. “to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues.”

They, like I was, were inspired by these students, whose response to tragedy wasn’t to cower in fear, but to stand up for their own safety and fight for the government that represents them to do something. As reported by Deadline Hollywood, the Clooneys said in a joint statement:

“Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School. Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating 500,000 dollars to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it.”

This is amazing, and definitely takes what started as a grassroots effort and can kick it up to the next level. Here’s hoping that they’re also planning to do additional activism around the event. Perhaps they will be in attendance at the march, or make this issue a bigger priority in their future political actions. Important too is encouraging their peers to do the same.

So what about you? Are you encouraged/inspired to help? You can donate to the March for Our Lives or buy merch in support HERE.
