First Krypton Trailer Digs Deep for More Origin Story

It's about time we got a Smallville origin story.

Are you tired of superhero sequels, origin stories, and reboots? Then buckle up for Syfy’s new Krypton show, which somehow manages to be all three simultaneously.

As it turns out, the show about Superman’s home planet knows where the real story is: with Superman himself. So, as this trailer demonstrates, they’re bringing in time travel so the show can feature a villain from the future whose entire motivation is centered around Superman—and a very literal take on “what if you went back in time and killed someone’s grandfather?” time travel theorizing. It’s up to Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El, to stop the destruction of Krypton, or at least delay it until it can facilitate the rise of Superman, which time traveler Adam Strange lets him in on.

In that way, it’s also kind of a reboot, as it messes with the original timeline of events in the DC Universe, although that likely won’t ever end up mattering to any other piece of DC-inspired media but this one. Executive producer David S. Goyer and DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns certainly have sprawling plans for it, though, teasing that the Green Lantern Corps and other DC characters and locations could figure in eventually, and “the inclusion of Adam Strange, that should tip you off that it’s not just going to be on Krypton.”

We’ll find out if that added level of freedom can help wring something fresh from this premise when the show debuts on Syfy on March 21.
