Growing up, I loved watching wuxia and kung-fu movies. Awesomely choreographed fight scenes, dramatic storylines, and women kicking ass—what more could you ask for? For its lineup this year, Subway Cinema’s Old School Kung Fu Fest is all about some of the most badass women of kung-fu.
While there’s no shortage of great kung-fu women, the Subway Cinema and Metrograph have compiled seven great films with powerful heroines. The description writes:
“It’s the seventh edition of Subway Cinema’s Old School Kung Fu Fest, a perennially wild weekend of incredible classic martial arts and action movies, and for this lucky year we’ve got something extra special: ‘Wonder Women of the Martial Arts,’ featuring some of the fiercest female warriors to ever grace kung fu cinema, a wellspring of tough gals.”
The seven films include Huang Feng’s Hapkido, Lau Kar-Leung’s My Young Auntie, Chor Yuen’s Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan, and Corey Yuen’s Yes, Madam. There are three King Hu films in the line-up, including Come Drink With Me, The Fate of Lee Khan, and A Touch of Zen. The trailer also promises a special appearance by Angela Mao, the iconic star of Lady Whirlwind, Hapkido, and more.
Whether you can attend or just found a few new films to add to your to-watch list, it’s never a bad time to appreciate these kick-ass women. Just watching these moments made me feel powerful as hell and ready to fight.
