Rihanna Shares Valerian Teaser, Details About Her Shapeshifting Alien Character, Bubble

Recommended Videos

We’re mere weeks away from the release of Luc Besson’s latest project, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. As such, the hype train rolls along its merry way, this time picking up steam after one of the film’s stars posted a really sweet interview and tiny (I mean really tiny) behind-the-scenes peek at the film. Rihanna, who plays shapeshifting alien Bubble, fangirled over working with Besson, who, in turn, lavished some really nice praise on the international superstar.

Trust me, if I were in Rihanna’s shoes, I’d be geeking out over working with Besson, too. The film’s pretty solidly staffed as well, what with Dane DeHaan taking on the titular role of Valerian, and Cara Delevigne as his partner, Laureline. Also present is Ethan Hawke (as “Jolly the Pimp” … huh, yikes), John Goodman, Clive Owen (swoon), and the legendary Rutger Hauer. Beyond that, everything we’ve seen about the movie up until now has been pure eye candy. I fully expect to walk out of the theater with perhaps a bit of a headache from the constant exposure to the film’s incredibly shiny and vibrant color palette.

As we’ve seen in the trailers and in this little peek, we know that Rihanna’s character is a performer, which is totally right up in her wheelhouse. I get some very serious Fifth Element vibes from the short bits we’ve seen of her character (that opera scene, maybe a tiny bit of Ruby Rhod mixed in), and that’s knowing Besson directed that incredible sci-fi touchstone, too.

Needless to say, I’m stoked. If you are too, then you can check out Valerian when it lands in theaters July 21st.
