Remember that show The Tudors, starring Jonathan Rhys-Myers, a pre-GoT Natalie Dormer, a pre-Orphan Black Maria Doyle Kennedy, and a pre-Man of Steel Henry Cavill? It wasn’t historically accurate, nor was it a particularly serious show, but it was hella trashy, hella fun, and hella sexy. It looks like we’re getting another historical drama set in England with similar attributes. This time, all about our favorite Bard.
According to its official description Will, which arrives next month to TNT, is a “drama about the lost years of young William Shakespeare after his arrival to London in 1589 — when theatre was like rock and roll and a young man with a dream changed the world with his words.” Check out the trailer above.
Despite the focus on making things “sexy” and “punk,” the modern fashions incorporated into the show’s wardrobe, and the likelihood that this show will be kinda trashy, this trailer also makes me think that this show could also have some unexpected weight simply because of our current times. Never has it been more important to reaffirm artists’ role in creating change in our world.
I really love the focus placed on the fact that Shakespeare tackled a lot of issues surrounding race, gender, power, and human nature that were way ahead of his time. He brought certain ideas (and yes, made up certain words) long before the world was ready for them, and he was only able to do that through the access that theater provided. Theater remains an important political tool today.
