Amazon just dropped the first trailer for their new animated show Danger & Eggs today, which features the voices of Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant and Eric Knobel as the titular duo.
The synopsis reads:
“In this new Amazon Original Series, Danger & Eggs, fearless D.D. Danger is always chasing her next big thrill but luckily for her, Phillip, her giant talking egg friend, is always there by her side with his jerry-rigged safety mechanisms to make her daring dreams come true. Together, they go in search of new adventures at their favorite spot, Chicken Paw Park.”
You can already watch the pilot here, which is a little less than 12 minutes. From the first episode, the two are extremely lovable and their dynamic as friends is not only hilarious, but surprisingly warm. It’s easy for cartoons to keep their characters very one-note, but in the pilot we see D.D. get worried that she’s not being considerate enough for Phillip and Phillip doing everything he can to protect his best friend. It’s the balance of young wacky adventure, cartoon action humor, and mature friendships that I love seeing and already want more of!
In this Huffington Post article, co-creator Shadi Petosky says that she and Mike Owen have been developing the show’s characters for 6 years. It’s great to see them finally come to life for a young audience. While we only see hints of this in the first episode, Petosky describes the emotional story behind the wacky hijinks saying, “D.D. and Phillip both have absentee parents. They both have abandonment. I think about my friendship with some trans kids. They have this whole childhood I didn’t get so I root for them, try to keep them safe. I’m not their parent, but I want them to be ok.”
