I’m starting to feel personally victimized by the film industry. Just when I finished processing Kathryn Bigelow’s choice not to feature any black women in Detroit (based on the 1967 riot that saw black men and women beaten and murdered), Hollywood hits back with another blow. It turns out there’s another Labyrinth movie in the works and, no, I’m not here for it. Well, I wasn’t until I learned more details.
To be honest, the original wasn’t that great and it would be nice to give the story a nice facelift, but I’m still wary about touching such an iconic film. Part of what made it special was the collaboration between George Lucas, Jim Henson in what turned out to be the final film he directed, and Monty Python’s Terry Jones (who wrote the script). Plus, you can never replace David Bowie.
But Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez is reportedly working on a sequel which should avoid that very problem. In addition to directing, Alvarez will team up with Jay Basu to write the script. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they’re also developing a sequel to Girl With the Dragon Tattoo titled Girl in the Spider’s Web. Even more reassuring is the fact that Lisa Henson of The Jim Henson Company has signed on to produce.
While most proposed sequels to beloved films leave me groaning in agony, this one has me feeling carefully optimistic. How do you feel about it?
