Samira Wiley, who played fan favorite Poussey on Orange Is The New Black, married her longtime partner Lauren Morelli over the weekend. The single wedding picture released is so stunning that it’s still trending on Facebook. This is pretty much all I can think about while every other headline declares that Jared Kushner is being put in charge of America Inc. Let’s look at something nice this morning.
Samira Wiley is much missed on Orange Is The New Black (she was inarguably one of the best things about the Netflix women’s prison dramedy). While she’s moved on to other projects like the upcoming Handmaid’s Tale adaptation, the OiTNB set was where Wiley met her now-wife, writer and producer Lauren Morelli.
At the time, Morelli was married to a man, and credits the process of writing for the show with realizing her orientation. In an essay for Identities.Mic, Morelli wrote:
Accordingly, I was nervous about the first love scene I’d written for Alex and Piper. I’d loved writing it, loved watching a tenderness emerge in their relationship where passion always seemed to be the ruling principle, but by that time, I was so deep in my own self-doubt that I constantly felt like a fraud. I was sure it was bleeding into my writing. How could it not? I was married to a man, but I wasn’t straight.
Wiley and Morelli started dating after the dissolution of Morelli’s marriage, and they got engaged last year. Since then, the pictures posted to Instagram have shown a wonderfully happy—and proudly visible—couple.
Even with this preparation, I wasn’t ready for the sheer perfection of the Wiley/Morelli wedding. Held in Palm Springs, both brides wore custom Christian Siriano—a white dress for Wiley and a caped pantsuit for Morelli—and, look, my friends, I don’t even like fashion or believe in marriage but the sight of these two is breathtaking.
You can condemn the wedding industrial complex with me, but I’m all for Wiley and Morelli capitalizing on social media’s excitement around their marriage. I hope they make bank. If Kim and Kanye command millions for their ceremonial photos, why not Samira and Lauren?
We need lots of LGBTQIA relationships broadcast worldwide—and when it’s celebrities, they’re reaching a huge audience. A picture is worth a thousand words. More of this, Hollywood.
