There’s a Percy Jackson Musical on the Way, and It’s Magical

Did you read or watch watch The Lightning Thief and think, “This is great but it could use more musical numbers?” Then you’re in luck, because The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical will start performances at the Lucille Lortel Theatre starting March 23rd.

The show was originally an hour long and began as part of Theaterworks USA’s free theatre series in 2014.  They even went on a successful tour around the country, but the new version has a bunch of new songs, a larger cast, a live band, and spans 2 hours. Endorsed by writer Rick Riordan, this musical brings Percy Jackson’s journey to learn about his background and find Zeus’ lightning bolt to Off-Broadway with a highly talented cast. I had the chance to attend a mini-presentation of the show which included small performances of three songs, and they’re all fun and catchy.

Written by Joe Tracz (A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Rob Rokicki (Strange Tails) and directed by Stephen Brackett (Buyer and Cellar), the musical stars Chris McCarrell as Jackson. You can see McCarrell sing one of the songs in the video above, and his credits include playing Marius in the Tony-nominated revival of Les Miserables and a role in The OA. He says he’s “excited to work with the team to make this innovative, magical and heartfelt show our own.” The cast also includes Jelani Alladin, Sarah Beth Pfeifer, Jonathan Raviv, George Salazar, and Kristin Stokes.
