Buckle up, everyone, because a musical based on The Devil Wears Prada book and film could be heading to Broadway sometime in the future. According to Deadline, awards-winning producer Kevin McCollum wants to bring the story to life in musical form. After winning several Tony awards for his work on In the Heights, Avenue Q, and Rent, you could say he’s the perfect person for the job.
Even better, musical icon Elton John and playwright/screenwriter Paul Rudnick are teaming up to write the show. “Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theater is super exciting. I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture,” John said.
The best-selling novel was written by Lauren Weisberger and went on sale in 2003. The book was then adapted into a 2006 film starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. The plot centers on an aspiring writer who lands an assistant gig with Miranda Priestly, a notoriously difficult fashion editor.
“To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story,” Fox Stage Productions’ Bob Cohen and Fox Stage Productions and McCollum added. “We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could think of only two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick. That’s all!”
