A Rogue One Comic Is on the Way, & It Will Go Deeper Than the Movie

Recommended Videos

You’ve probably already seen Rogue One a million times by now (yeah, we know), you may even have read the prequel novel a few times itself, and you probably watched Star Wars Rebels for the Saw Gerrera’s tie-in, but soon, those won’t be your only options for reliving the movie! There’s also a comic book adaptation on the way, written by Jody Houser and illustrated by Emilio Laiso.

The story will be broken into a six-issue series that retells the events of the movie, albeit not strictly as a complete carbon copy. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Houser said that the series will go beyond what was on the screen, as well as what was in the well-received novelization. That’s exciting, considering that even the novel went deeper in some areas than the movie did, so it’s possible that the comic will further clarify some things that were downplayed on the big screen.

Rogue One also went through some storied reshoots as the film was nearing completion, so it’ll be interesting to see what’s different in this new retelling. However, not a whole lot is likely to change, since all Star Wars stories across all mediums now must fit into the same canon, so more than superficial deviation from what was in the movie is pretty much out of the question.

In terms of what will get some attention in the comic, Houser said, “I love the characters who stole the movie as much as everyone else—Chirrut, Baze and K-2SO, I would say—but I find something really compelling about the trio of Bodhi, Jyn, and Cassian. You have the new convert, the lapsed believer, and the life-long devout thrown together to work for a common goal. That’s a dynamic I’m excited to explore further.” So are we!
