Thor: Ragnarok‘s Official Synopsis Puts Thor in “Deadly Gladiatorial Contest” Against the Hulk

Yet it's also, somehow, a "buddy movie."

I don’t know that Thor will be able to hold his own in a fight against the Hulk, but according to this new official synopsis of Thor: Ragnarok, he’s going to have to try. Sure, if he had his hammer, he could probably keep up… but according to this description of the movie, Thor may not have his hammer at hand!

Here’s the full movie description, via /Film. Don’t read any further if you don’t want any hints about how the story goes, obviously:

“In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger — the Incredible Hulk!

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and returns Chris Hemsworth starring as Thor and Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as Loki. They are joined by Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban, with Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.

Kevin Feige is producing with Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Thomas M. Hammel and Stan Lee serving as executive producers. The story is by Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost and Stephany Folsom, and the screenplay is by Eric Pearson. “Thor: Ragnarok” thunders into U.S. theaters on November 3, 2017.”

I have a feeling that this whole Hulk vs. Thor gladiatorial match-up will end in friendship, somehow, because we know that the movie is going to be a buddy movie about Thor and the Hulk. Or, at least, that’s how the movie got described a year ago. I’m sure the movie’s changed a bit since then, but it seems fair to expect some decent scenes between the pair.

Although the movie description sounds super serious, I’m actually expecting to see some good comedy from this entry in the Thor series, given that director Taika Waititi is renowned for directing some great comedies (e.g. What We Do In the Shadows, Eagle vs Shark, and several Flight of the Conchords episodes). Plus, we know that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will have a cameo in the movie, and he was a total wise-cracker in his solo movie, so I expect he will be again here.

Anyway, here’s a peek behind the scenes at Waititi giving Chris Hemsworth some direction:

Taika Waititi has previously promised that Chris Hemsworth will be getting more opportunities to use his comedy chops in this movie, with the goal that—for once!!—Thor won’t be overshadowed by every other character in his own movie. Hemsworth was hilarious in his role as Kevin in Ghostbusters this year, so I’m sure he’s up to the task.

In general, it’ll be interesting to see how Taika Waititi’s influence ends up elevating what sounds like a grim, by the books, stop-the-apocalypse type of storyline. I think I’d rather see Thor (and the Hulk) cracking jokes, instead, so I hope that’s the focus. And I hope Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson get the chance to crack some great one-liners, too!
