Honest Trailers Skewers Independence Day: Resurgence, a Boring Action Slog 20 Years in the Making

Recommended Videos

Remember Independence Day: Resurgence? Yeah, I didn’t either, at least not at this point. We can definitely file this movie under “failed experiment” when it comes to the cashing-in-on-nostalgia genre of movies, and now Honest Trailers is here to remind us that this movie existed and also that it was super boring.

Screen Junkies cuts together an unflinching criticism of how incredibly “meh” this movie felt to watch. It came out 20 years after Independence Day, and mostly what we learned is that this franchise can’t survive without Will Smith’s unstoppable charisma. Shouldn’t that have been obvious before they made this? Oh, well.

Even the few action sequences that appear in this Honest Trailer, with the help of jokes on top of them, feel boring to watch. Perhaps the problem isn’t that the movie’s boring, but also that we’re a long ways away from 1996 in pretty much every way. The President’s new twist on the climactic speech in this film is, apparently, no longer “This is our Independence Day!” But rather, “Today… is… not going to be.” Seems about right. Without Will Smith to save the planet, it all just seems kind of pointless.

Sorry. I’m having a nihilistic sort of week. You understand. Anyway, the Honest Trailer’s pretty funny, so, enjoy that.
