Last night, Marvel’s head of TV Jeph Loeb unveiled an announcement that made every sci-fi fan lift their voice and cheer: Sigourney Weaver has signed on to play a role in Netflix’s The Defenders, the upcoming TV series that will combine the forces of the heroes we’ve seen on Netflix’s Marvel TV shows so far. Specifically, Weaver will be playing the villain. YESSS!
The announcement unfolded at New York Comic Con, and Marvel’s Defenders came out to welcome Sigourney Weaver to the stage alongside them. So, in addition to Weaver, fans got to see Charlie Cox (who plays Daredevil), Finn Jones (who will be the lead in Iron Fist), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), and Mike Colter (Luke Cage) all hangin’ out, looking bad-ass:

No one knows yet which character Weaver will play, but speculation has already begun since last night. I’ve seen multiple people suggesting that Weaver could be playing “The Beast,” a primordial demon lord who has served as a villain to Daredevil and Iron Fist in the past. If so, this would be a gender-swap casting, since normally The Beast is characterized as male. But, really, when we’re talking about supernatural demons, they could manifest as anything right? There’s no reason why Sigourney Weaver wouldn’t be able to pull that off–assuming that’s the direction The Defenders decides to take. We just don’t know yet who she’ll play. But we do know she’s gonna bring it.
