Michael Fassbender was the guest of honor at the Toronto Film Festival annual pre-opening-night fundraiser last Wednesday, where he and artistic director Cameron Bailey had a career retrospective. You can check out a detailed summary of the event over at Vulture, but one particularly entertaining bit is the description of the actor “cringing and rubbing his face with embarrassment” at a clip of him as Magneto in X-Men Days of Future Past.
Fassbender revealed that he’s not a big fan of his take on the role, stating “I don’t actually like that performance there, to be honest. I just think it’s me shouting. It’s just like [he made an angry face and flailed his arms around] some dude shouting.” It’s kind of nice to see him poke fun at his acting, especially since he takes so many serious and macho roles.
The full account of the event is equally interesting, from Fassbender’s horrible first impression on Steve McQueen in Hunger, to him casually asking his driver to break his arm so he could get out of Steve Jobs––a role that he didn’t believe he would be able to do, and referred to as a “miscast scenario” (which might be the most “Stars! They’re just like us!” moment ever for me).
