Monday brought the awful news that Gene Wilder had passed away, and since then, tributes to the legendary comedic actor have been pouring in on social media and television. The Late Late Show host James Corden even uploaded a special video on how Wilder had “rejected” an opportunity to appear on the show.
Now, Conan O’Brien is also paying tribute by posting a video of his 2005 interview with the star of such films as Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. “It was a true honor to talk to Gene Wilder. He was an unusually brilliant and sweet comic artist,” he wrote, while linking what would turn out to be Wilder’s final late night television appearance.

During the interview, Wilder talks about how young children have been recognizing him on the street for his iconic turn as Willy Wonka, as well as a fight with Mel Brooks over a memorable moment that almost didn’t make it in Young Frankenstein.
