If Stranger Things didn’t scare the bejeezus out of you at least a few times, then maybe this virtual reality experience based on the show will. Clocking in at just under two minutes, this YouTube-based VR video is well worth a watch, provided you’ve got either a full-on VR headset setup or even just Google Cardboard. It’s not the most vividly detailed thing, but it’s just atmospheric enough to put you on edge.
I’ll not spoil it, but the video takes place in the Byers’ living room, fully decked out in Christmas lights. If you’ve seen the show, then you know what goes down in that living room, and if you haven’t, well… you will, I guess. Tip: make sure you pay attention to any instructions or sounds you hear, otherwise you might miss the big reveal.
This video marks Netflix’s first foray into original VR content. It feels a lot like a proof of concept, a sketch of an idea about where entertainment might be headed. While Stranger Things isn’t exactly at the top of my “I Want to Live In This World” list, I think the idea behind it is very sound. The choice to go with Stranger Things as a first experience is a fine choice, as well, since the idea of horror genre VR experiences is one that many, many game companies have done (nearly to death, I’ll say). It’s easy to elicit some strong emotions out of a person with a scary experience, that’s for sure.
As well, Stranger Things is a show that lends itself very well to this idea of an immersive world (quasi-pun not really intended, I swear). The show is built in such a way that it’s absolutely suggestive of a much deeper, richer background–one that lies, well, just out of reach, we’ll say.
