Jeremy Irons Says Criticisms of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Were Deserved

Et tu, Alfred?

Speaking with The Daily Mail this week about everything from his role in Race to whether or not he’d ever want to be knighted (a hard no), Jeremy Irons, who said in the interview that he will “forever be playing Devil’s Advocate,” was very open about his thoughts on the harsh reception Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received from critics: “Deservedly so. I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed…It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”

It’s a little surprising to hear Irons being so blunt, given he’s still slated to reprise his role as Alfred in Justice League. However, considering DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns has been tasked with overseeing DC movies following the critical reception of Dawn of Justice, it also makes sense that Irons is more optimistic about the rest of the franchise.

Justice League will also star Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman. J.K. Simmons is slated to appear as Commissioner Gordon; Amber Heard as Queen Mera; and Willem Dafoe as an unspecified villain.
