Lupita Nyong’o May Be Joining Black Panther as T’Challa’s Love Interest

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lupita Nyong’o is currently in talks to star opposite Chadwick Boseman in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, the movie based on the Marvel superhero due out in 2018. There are no details currently out about the role, except for that she would potentially be playing T’Challa (Black Panther)’s love interest. It’s pretty damned exciting to think that Nyong’o, a brilliant actress all in her own right, may be joining the Marvel universe.

The question around who she’ll be playing (if she’s confirmed for the role) is one that we’ll undoubtedly be speculating about for quite some time. We Are Wakanda has a good rundown of T’Challa’s love interests. The list includes: Malaika, a Wakandan trade envoy to Paris, singer Monica Lynne, and erstwhile Captain Marvel Monica Rambeau. Of these three, Lynne stands as the “longest lasting” one, with their relationship described as being “on-again off-again,” even skirting marriage.

While I would 150% love love love to see Nyong’o play Rambeau, because that would suggest a future appearance in Captain Marvel, I think it’s more likely she’ll be playing Lynne. We already know that the Captain Marvel in the MCU will be Carol Danvers, but we also know that Danvers is pals with Rambeau.

Regardless, we have quite a bit of a wait ahead of us; Black Panther begins shooting in early 2017.
