UnREAL is coming back for a second season next month, and from the preview Buzzfeed shared, it promises to be just as intense as last season. If you’re not familiar with the show, it centers around Rachel (Shiri Appleby) and Quinn (Constance Zimmer), the producers of a Bachelor-type reality show called Everlasting and the ways they manipulate and exploit the female contestants. It’s brutal, dark, and tackles social problems and media representation with little hesitation or subtlety.
This season, B.J. Britt plays the leading man, Darius Hill. It was announced a while back that UnREAL was casting a black bachelor before The Bachelor, and that the show would dive deeper into portrayals of race and race in reality television. The casting call described characters that included an African American debutante, a white girl who shows up “in a Confederate flag bikini,” a “ESPN reporter Samantha Ponder” type, a “Bree Newsome crossed with Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams,” and “a young Amal Clooney” so this season will be a wild one.
From the brief clip, it’s clear that Rachel (who we left in a questionable state last season) is still struggling with her mental health issues, another topic that UnREAL is also invested in. Rachel, who was more of an unwilling participant in the first season, seems fully comfortable in her role as Quinn 2.0 now, and People shared some addition clips of her editing video clips to be misleading, twisting words and being unapologetically dishonest.
