Denzel Washington, Burt Macklin Star in The Magnificent Seven Trailer

First things first: I’ve never seen the 1960 Magnificent Seven, or the movie it was based on, Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. So even though I’m kind of digging this Magnificent Seven remake trailer, keep in mind I haven’t seen the earlier versions of this story, so I don’t have much of a point of comparison. That being said: this looks promising!

This first trailer features Denzel Washington as Sam Chisolm, Chris Pratt as Josh Farraday, Ethan Hawke as Goodnight Robicheaux, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Vasquez, Vincent Do’Onofrio as Jack Horne, Byung-Hun Lee as Billy Rocks, and Martin Sensmeier as Red Harvest. Bryce Dallas Howard-look-alike Haley Bennett plays the woman requesting Sam Chisolm’s aid at the beginning of the trailer, and I’m hoping that she winds up having a more significant role in the movie overall than “lady who picturesquely weeps” (IMDB doesn’t even list a name for her character yet).

That concern aside, I do love the look and feel of this trailer; I’m a sucker for panoramic shots of horses and any use of “House of the Rising Sun.” They could have included that song in the end credits of Mortdecai and I probably would have come away thinking “great movie!” Hopefully Magnificent Seven will be better than that, at least.

Here’s an official synopsis:

Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

Thoughts? Are you at all intrigued by this trailer?
