Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult Feel So Many Emotions in New Equals Trailer

Recommended Videos

Back in February, we shared a peek at an upcoming Equilibrium-esque sci-fi/futuristic movie starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult. Titled Equals, it centers on two people who live in a “utopian” society where emotions are outlawed. Hoult plays an animator who contracts a “disease” that allows him to feel feelings again (boy, what a disease). In the course of the movie, he learns that Stewart’s character has the same disease. And, as people in movies like these do, they fall in love and try their best to hide their emotions.

This trailer we have here is a much more in-depth look into the movie, focusing on the relationship between Stewart and Hoult. What’s incredibly striking to me about this film is its visual style; the movie’s being executive produced by Ridley Scott, so you know where that’s likely coming from.

Something that gets to me about this trailer is that for a “utopian” society, it’s pretty, uh… monochromatic, and I’m not just talking about those all-white costumes they’re wearing. It’s a bit disappointing to think that someone’s idea of a perfect, harmonious society doesn’t include people of color. According to IMDb, Claudia Kim (Avengers: Age of UltronMarco Polo) is in the movie, but only her voice; she plays something called “The Collective.” The rest of the list on IMDb is pretty thin on people of color, so take that as you will.

I still find myself just a little bit curious to see how this movie turns out. What about you? Will you be checking out Equals when it hits theaters July 15th?
