First Look at Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan in Luc Besson’s Valerian

MTV’s Josh Horowitz takes us on a first look at the sci-fi film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets set, where he spoke to Cara Delevingne, Dane DeHaan, and writer/director Luc Besson. Based on the French comic series Valérian and Laureline by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézieres (who worked with Besson on the movie) with a contemporary lens, here’s the official synopsis:

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

“This is going to be the best movie of all time,” says Delevingne, “it’s gotta be secret,” referencing the shroud of mystery around the movie and the unspecified roles of Ethan Hawke, Kris Wu, and John Goodman. She exclaims she’s very excited to be part of a long line of kick-ass Luc Besson heroines, and we see her being very kick-ass in a series of clips wearing some awesome-looking gear. Combined with her role in Suicide Squad as Enchantress, I’m thrilled to see her in more and more in comic book action films.

Besson confesses he was skeptical at first because of her modeling background, but Delevingne quickly won him over. DeHaan talks about the influence of Valerian on Star WarsAvatar, and his “cool first weeks” working with Delevingne and Rihannawhose role is still unspecified (all we know is she has a “big part”) despite Horowitz’s efforts to get Delevingne to dish out some details. Valerian and the City of a Thousand planets doesn’t come out until July 21st, 2017, but so far it looks action-packed and Delevigne’s promise that “every particle of [the viewer’s] body will be blown away” is getting me very hyped. What do you think?
