Last night, celebrities partook in the cathartic ritual of reading mean tweets about themselves on Jimmy Kimmel Live. It might be worth pointing out that even though this was the “Movie Edition” of Mean Tweets, and aired in close proximity to the Oscars, it doesn’t just feature Oscar nominees, or even actors who are primarily known for their work on film, which I think was a good call. (Christoph Waltz, Patricia Arquette, George Clooney, Jessica Chastain, Eddie Redmayne, Susan Sarandon, Kevin Costner, Emily Blunt, Zach Galifianakis, Kevin Hart, Richard Dreyfuss, Cate Blanchett, Seth Rogen, Oscar Isaac, Taraji P. Henson and Sean Penn were all in attendance.)
What do you think, friends? Even though it’s kind of strange to me to see the celebrities responding with deliberate casualness to very hateful remarks, I think the segment does a pretty good job of framing it so that the joke is really on hateful Twitter users—particularly those with transparent gender or racial biases—rather than the celebrities themselves. I dunno, how do you feel about “Mean Tweets”?
