Prepare Yourself: There’s a Live-Action Sonic Movie In the Works

Recommended Videos

Ours is not to wonder why. Ours is just to watch the live-action Sonic movie that Sega has announced. After all, what other properties does the company really have to offer up for potential movie adaptations? Sonic still has a lot of name recognition, even though he’s become a shadow (heh) of his former self. There’s no denying that Sonic’s fandom is still devoted, though, so perhaps their love will be enough to make this movie a hit.

Let’s hear out what little information we have, via The World Folio‘s interview with Hajime Satomi, President and CEO:

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.

A blend of both live-action and animation, eh? Just like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, or Space Jam, both examples of movies whose success has never been replicated. But, you know, whenever I hear about a live-action/animated hybrid, it’s obligatory that I mention those two movies, so we all can reflect on how great they were. Those movies were both far better than they had any right to be. And it would be pretty amazing to see a Sonic movie that even approached Space Jam‘s level, let alone Roger Rabbit!

Personally, I’m going to hope for “so bad it’s good” when it comes to this Sonic movie. It doesn’t sound like a good idea — but it might end up being hilarious anyway!
