The Word is… Grease: Live Will Include Original Cast Members

It’s hard to believe it was almost two years ago that Fox announced it would be tossing its name into the live musical pool with Grease–but the day is almost upon us. The upcoming production of Grease: Live is set to air on January 31st–and unlikely those we’ve already seen from NBC, will be happening in front of a live studio audience.

There’ll be some new and some faces bringing the classic roles to life–like Graceland‘s Aaron Tveit as Danny and Julianne Hough as Sandy, as well as Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo and Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchie.

But even more exciting news was announced at the TCA press tour yesterday–not only will there be new, but there will also be familiar faces from the original Grease cast involved in the live performance. Didi Conn, who originated the role of the bubblegum-haired Frenchie in the original film, will be playing Vi, the waitress at the malt shop who has a memorable encounter with Frenchie after the Pink Lady’s disastrous day at beauty school. Barry Pool, who played T-Bird Doody, will also make an appearance.

“We do have a moment where we have the generations staring at each other and having this really wonderful scene and that was pretty thrilling to watch to say the last and incredibly moving for all of us,” director Thomas Kail said.

As far as we know, there won’t be any other cameos from former Grease cast–but that doesn’t mean there won’t be one or two more surprises along the way. It is going to be a live show, after all. You can check out the video teasing at behind-the-scenes rehearsals below:
