Neil Patrick Harris is Bringing the Evil to A Series of Unfortunate Events

Bad guy five!

Remember when we got our first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events? Only after all that hype did we come to find out that the trailer was just a wonderful thing concocted by a talented fan–but we know the adaptation is still happening, and now we have our first piece of casting news.

Neil Patrick Harris has signed on in the role of the evil Count Olaf–who, as you’ll recall, was originally played to memorable effect in the film version by Jim Carrey. (Count Olaf is the uncle of the brilliant Beaudelaire children who attempts to steal their inheritance… through a series of unfortunate events?)

With the casting news of NPH, however, also came the news that Mark Hudis had stepped down as showrunner of the series. That does still leave Barry Sonnenfeld in place as director of the 13 episodes that are scheduled to air on Netflix, but we don’t know if anyone’s going to be taking over as showrunner quite yet.

Either way, this is a casting choice I can kind of see myself getting behind. How about you?
