The forgetful but charming Dory, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, was always the standout star of Finding Nemo — and the first trailer for her much-deserved follow-up film, Finding Dory, does not disappoint. The trailer features the characters we already remember from the first movie (Dory, Nemo, and Marlin), but EW has revealed a peek today at two of the movie’s brand-new characters.
Ty Burrell (Modern Family) voices a beluga whale, who’s named Bailey, and Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny) voices a whale shark named Destiny:
Burrell and Olson sound thrilled to join the cast; they’ll be playing a couple of goofballs, so they’ll fit right in with the characters we know and love. Burrell explains:
My character isn’t great at his own sonar capability, and Destiny has trouble swimming straight … There’s always a deeper message with Pixar, and so much of it [in Finding Dory] is that these characters are trying to find faith in themselves. They’re trying to overcome their insecurities in order to help somebody in need.
Olson elaborates on the characters’ dynamic:
We totally get on each other’s nerves. I like to think I’m a shark, but Bailey calls me a whale, and I make fun of his head, because it’s gigantic … We would just play off each other. Though to be honest, I was probably the boss of the entire situation, because I always like to be.
Although Finding Dory will come out over a decade after its predecessor, the story is set six months after the first movie left off. I don’t think I’ll have any trouble sinking back into this world. How about all of you?
