The Killing Joke Might be the First R-Rated Batman Flick

Maybe. Or... maybe not?

The Killing Joke is an infamous story, and while the animated film adaptation technically won’t be released until sometime next year we got more info about how the creative team might be allowed to go to all those dark places.

At New York Comic-Con’s Batman: Bad Blood panel on Friday, producer James Tucker confirmed that the involved studios had given the go-ahead for The Killing Joke to secure an R rating… that is, if they want it. While DC and Warner Bros. have both said it’s okay for the film to be made with an R rating in mind, Tucker added that it’s not necessarily the endgame.

Technically, this would be the first Batman movie to be released with an R-rating, since even the most recent live-action films with Christian Bale were only PG-13.

It probably goes without saying that The Killing Joke is one of the more brutal storylines in the canon, so while it’s good that the minds behind the film are being granted more flexibility in translating it for screen it certainly leads us to wonder just how dark this is gonna get.
