Podcast Hit Serial‘s Season Two to Tackle a Case With a National Scope

Recommended Videos

If you were as obsessed with the hit podcast Serial as the rest of America, you’ll be happy to know that the show has chosen the case on which it’ll focus for its second season! And it’s a lot bigger in scope.

Season 2 will follow the case of Bowe Bergdahl, the Army sergeant captured by the Taliban and held prisoner for five years after leaving his base in Afghanistan, who is now being charged with desertion. Pretty intense stuff, and certainly a story on a larger scale than the small-town case of Adnan Syed. According to Pajiba:

Bergdahl, who is currently being charged for desertion, was recovered by the Taliban in a swap of Taliban prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay. President Obama has been both celebrated and decried for making the deal.

The story is so sprawling that it also provides fodder for an upcoming film being written by Mark Boal and Hugo Lindgren (a former NY Times editor) and directed by Kathryn Bigelow that they’re currently working on. Boal and Lindgren will also be helping tell the story on Serial, alongside host Sarah Koenig, as they await the ending of their movie – the end of Bergdahl’s trial.

For many, part of the charm of Serial was the fact that it made all of America (and other parts of the world!) care about a small-time case. It found the epic scope in something small. Will some of that charm evaporate in the face of a case that already has national interest? Or will Serial feel like just another news report?

What do you think? Will you be downloading Serial this season when it drops later this year?
