Watch Jack Black’s Exaggerated Portrayal of R.L. Stine In The Goosebumps Trailer

Recommended Videos

“Okay, we’ve got a Goosebumps picture deal. Which book should we do?” “Oh, uh … is there a way to just do all of them?” That’s how I imagine the pitch meeting for the upcoming Goosebumps film must have gone. The result will star Jack Black as a fictional version of author R.L. Stine who possesses a library of books, each of which has a supernatural beasts locked inside. Like, literally locked inside, with a lock and a key for every book.

The film also features a ragtag group of teens who’ve read every Goosebumps book and who tag along with Stine on a monster-evading adventure. It looks like Odeya Rush will star as The Only Girl, plus the film’s cast (in this trailer, at least) looks pretty monochromatic — which disappointed me a little, given the diversity of kids who’ve enjoyed Goosebumps over the years. Scary stories should be humanity’s great unifier!

Anyway, the film’s clever concept seems like a great way to display the best of Goosebumps without going into super-dark horror territory that might scare the wee ones too much to attend. The actual books used to scare the crap out of me, anyway, so I’m glad the studio didn’t try to do a one-to-one feature version of Welcome to Dead House or Say Cheese and Die! or [insert any other terrifying Goosebumps book here].

Which were your favorite monsters from the books? Did any of them have a cameo in this trailer?
