Forest Whitaker in Talks to Join Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One

Forest Whitaker will be adding some intensity to the already awesome cast of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, according to Variety. He seems like a great get, given the movie’s aim at a darker, more “grey area of war”-type of approach to the franchise.

It’ll be interesting to see exactly what his role is, as there’s no scuttlebutt about what that might be. We’ve probably got a bit of a wait, as the movie isn’t due out until December 16th, 2016.

As we’ve reported beforeRogue One is a movie focused on the team of rebels who set out to steal the Death Star plans before Episode IV. While there’s no word yet on whether there’ll be any Bothan spies on the team, we’ve been told to expect that this movie will definitely be a war movie, which is great given his prior role in the classic war movie Platoon way back when.

Frankly, a movie without the hope the Jedi usually bring seems like an intriguing premise for the Star Wars universe. As Gareth Edwards mentioned, “It’s about the fact that God’s not coming to save us. The absence of the Jedi hangs over the movie.”

Speaking of directors for Star Wars Anthology movies, Michelle MacLaren is apparently taking meetings to talk about directing the second Star Wars Anthology movie. As you know, Josh Trank left the hot seat for the already-confirmed second film, citing the “exhausting fan base.”

MacLaren, who left the Wonder Woman movie because of “creative differences,” probably understands where he’s coming from. Here’s hoping maybe she can stick around and bring some nice perspective on the rumored Han Solo and Boba Fett story. I mean, can you imagine?
