Spoilers below for Guardians of the Galaxy, because it hasn’t come out everywhere yet. We’re looking out for you, Italy.

If you’re anything like me, after you saw Guardians of the Galaxy you skipped over to Wikipedia to find out the identity of Peter Quill’s mysterious father, the one whose handy non-Terran biology provided his son with the ability to hold an Infinity Stone for more than a few seconds without going ‘splodey. And if you’re anything like me, you followed up your discovery with “…J’son? What the hell kind of a name is ‘J’son’?”

Well hold onto your hats, comics purists, because director James Gunn has revealed that Peter’s father in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is “definitely not the character who it is in the comics.”

Obviously Gunn ain’t talking, but he has known Papa Star-Lord is in the MCU since before Guardians was even made:

“There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

So who could it be? For your entertainment and education, we present ten options for who might be Peter’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. They’re of, er… varying likelihood.
