“The Most Interesting Man In The World” is Actually Way More Interesting Than You

Recommended Videos

You have seen him on the beer ads, a Spanish-inflected accent rolling off his tongue like good Scotch. “I don’t always drink beer,” says The Most Interesting Man In The World. “But when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.” Hardly a glowing endorsement, but this is The Most Interesting Man In the World. He’s too cool to shill, he just recommends.

This weeks issue of The New Yorker looks beyond the character, and discovers that actor Johnathon Goldsmith may outshine his advertising persona. Starting humbly in a Jewish family, living in the Bronx, Goldsmith became an actor, launching a larger-than life career.

[…] rescuing a stranded climber on Mt. Whitney, saving a drowning girl in Malibu, sailing the high seas with his friend Fernando Lamas (the inspiration for his Interesting persona and, according to Goldsmith, “the greatest swordsman who ever lived in Hollywood”), and starting a successful network marketing business (“I was a hustler, a very good hustler”) […]

Other highlights include him buying pocket knives for his grandsons so that they can “cut off their seat belts,” and author Nick Paumgarten‘s observation that, “He goes to a boat show and buys a dog.”

From now on, I will watch these ads with pride. I still won’t drink Dos Equis, but I will live firm in the knowledge that Jonathan Goldsmith is completely badass. I can’t wait for someone to do an in-depth article on the real life of The Man Your Man Could Smell Like.
