The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water Trailer is Mildly Terrifying

SpongeBob SquarePants is no stranger to movies, but this new one is… not exactly what fans had in mind.

In the first movie, and even in a few episodes, the characters from Bikini Bottom have explored the concept of being outside of the water. They have never quite gone to this extent, though. Honestly, at first the trailer makes it seem like it’s for the next Pirates of the Caribbean or some other pirate-esque movie. While animation and reality rarely do a good job of intermixing, this movie seems like it’s going to try its best (read: worst). The characters look absolutely terrifying when they’re given superpowers.

The first movie pushed the line a little, bringing in David Hasselhoff and having several minutes of non-animation, but they kept the characters themselves mostly animated and went with the over-the-top realism for when Spongebob and Patrick dry out.

If only they had stuck with the classic “above water” style from season 2. Now that is a movie I would see.
