And Now For Something Completely Different

Terry Gilliam’s Vintage, Animated Christmas Card Features, Gunfire, Kidnapping, and Stealing [Video]

Before Matt Stone and Trey Parker became famous for their now-famous animated Christmas card that featured what would become South Park, Terry Gilliam was cutting up old Christmas cards and animating those into a darkly silly and twisted holiday greeting of his own. (Actually, he doesn’t do this for Christmas exclusively.) In this festive short from 1968, calamity ensues as Santa steals both toys and human beings while the three wise men get seriously misguided and lost in London.

In many respects, Terry Gilliam was the Cyriak of the late 1960s.

Eh, I’d say the Surrealist movement in general was the Cyriak of the last century or so. Terry’s Christmas card reminds me of Mad Magazine. Cyriak’s is about, like, turnips and skull-things giving birth. A cresh by way of madness, if you will.

Terry, you beautiful bastard. When you makin’ another film?
