Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

This Girl Will Probably Be My Boss One Day. I Don’t Mind. [VIDEO]

I actually didn’t know these were a thing until today but apparently there’s TED Talks by teenagers. Anyway, I’m glad the first one I watched blew me away. Editor-in-chief and founder of RookieMag.com is 15-year-old Tavi Gevinson (also read her work at thestylerookie.com). Listen to her talk about fictional female characters and what they mean for real women, figuring out who she is, helping others do the same, and just being an all-around intelligent and thoughtful woman with smart things to say.

Wow, this really blew me away. Seeing someone who’s so young and unpretentious is really inspiring. I really liked the analogy of feminism as a conversation, that was brilliant. I gotta say I’m pretty humbled to be taught something from a person ten years my junior.

You must have been living in a cave if you are just now hearing of the wondrous Tavi!

Wowsers! I am more than twice this girl’s age and she seems considerably more together than I am! Actually I’m old enough to be her (young!) mother. Age and experience wore me down and I’m more apathetic than I was in my teens and 20s but even back then I wasn’t as focussed and inspiring as Tavi here. And she seems cool which I *definitely* never was!

Good for her. I’d be very proud of her – and myself – if she was my daughter. As someone below said, she’s really unpretentious which is so nice to see. Many of us get very caught up in “issues” when we’re young and while the sentiment and the passion is good, it’s easy to sound naive and unrealistic. Tavi actually knows exactly what she’s talking about and I have no doubt she’ll make a real difference!
