Santa’s Eight Derpy Reindeer

Mel Roach is the one responsible for this Christmas miracle: Eight derpy reindeer. Sure, this is an adorable but unremarkable creature here. But after the jump, witness the festive and joyous derpy glory of all of Santa’s faithful companions. (He may need to call for backup this year.) From the top of the herp, to the top of the derp, Merry Christmas to all, and herp derp dee derp herp!

    I’d like to point out that “herp derp” is a reference to down syndrome. It’s a slur.

    The reindeer are cute though. I just may have liked them better without the ableism.

    I had no idea herp derp was a slur.  I imagine most people don’t know that, and see this phrase as just a silly phrase rather than ableism.  The coincidence is unfortunate, but it’s not malevolent.

    Then this is a learning opportunity! :) I don’t think the OP was attacking anyone, she was just pointing out that some readers may find the term hurtful. No one’s trying to police language here, just educate and perhaps request that more sensitivity is shown in the future.

    Not really a coincidence when the artist introduces the series on their tumblr by saying, “This month will be dedicated towards drawing retarded reindeer,” is it?

    There’s a big difference between “retarded” which most people just use as slang to mean “stupid” and “Down’s syndrome.” 

    I’m tired of PC warriors co-opting words, especially when the intent is obviously not meant to be offensive.  In this particular instance, does it look like Mel drew the reindeer to look like they have Down’s Syndrome?  No?  THEN IT’S NOT ABOUT DOWN’S SYNDROME.

    Not to continue being a PC warrior or whatever you think I am, but I also oppose the use of the word retarded for stupid.

    I’m not trying to say anyone’s a bad person here. Ableist language is a big problem and I don’t like running into it on a website that is usually so good about problematic language. I guess it’s silly for me to expect a safespace for geeky women to also be safe for people with disabilities.

    Out of curiosity was the whole “dickwolves” thing okay for you because PA never intended to be harmful? Intent isn’t magic. I was hurt regardless of intent here and that kindof sucks.

    Sorry about the link spam. Does that clarify at all where I’m coming from. I’m probably not the only person who also sees a resemblance between photoshopped “derp” faces and caricatures of people with down syndrome. Even in this one thread I’m not the only person who sees it as an ableist term. So at least the association isn’t coming out of the aether.
