Interviews Like This One, About the Women of Doctor Who, Are Why You Should Love Jane Espenson* [VIDEO]

In this episode of Just Cos, sci-fi writer/producer extraordinaire Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood… seriously, if there’s a genre show you’ve liked from the past ten years, chances are good she’s been involved. She’s like Mark Sheppard that way.) talks the intersection of ladydom, Doctor Who, and the larger world of sci-fi. Specific topics adressed by Espenson and a vast array of Who cosplayers include how to set about writing an awesome female character (Hint: You don’t), why there are so few male TARDIS cosplayers, and which female Whedonverse alum should play the Doctor.

(*also because she’s a good writer and producer. We don’t need just one reason to love Jane Espenson.)

Okay, I love Jane Espenson. And I love her casting choice. :)

I would love to see a female Doctor, I think it’s about time, but I’m nearly positive Moffat & Co aren’t up to the task. I would rather wait than see it done so horribly wrong.

I watched this interview this morning, then watched “Oblivion” and spent the entire movie thinking that the characters could have/should have been genderswapped. It was an OK movie but had rather traditional gender roles.

I’ve been brainstorming a way to cosplay as the TARDIS for a while now (this is of course hampered by the fact that I’ve never actually cosplayed before, and my sewing talent is more on the “small plush toy” level than the “tailored suit” level, which I hear tends to be rather on the advanced side).

I’m picturing something like… TARDIS blue suit, with black lapels that say “POLICE” on one side and “PUBLIC CALL / BOX” on the other. It would have patch pockets on the front, with the right one white with the “Free for public use” sign. There’d be a white pinstripe shirt to mimic the windows, with a TARDIS blue collar. The necktie would also be blue, except for the knot, which would be white (or even better, light-up!) for the lamp.

It’s not perfect, like I’m not crazy about how the windows end up above the “Police box” sign, but I’d love to give it a shot. If, y’know, I had the talent. Any thoughts on improvements?
