Yorick and Agent 355 from the Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra comic "Y: The Last Man."

Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man Is Finally Coming to TV. Thank You, FX!

The popular Vertigo comic Y: The Last Man seems like an obvious choice for a filmed adaptation, specifically for television, which would be best suited for the sprawling story of the last man on Earth (and his monkey) after a “gendercide.” Yet progress on this show has been surprisingly slow-moving. Well, we now have word that FX is finally bringing the story of Yorick and Agent 355 to life!

As reported by CBR.com, FX has ordered a pilot, written by Michael Green (American Gods, Blade Runner 2049). Green would be showrunning the show alongside Aida Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage, Turn), and this particular arrangement is apparently three years in the making.

Originally, Y: The Last Man was going to be a feature film over at New Line Cinema back in 2007. D.J. Caruso was “loosely attached” as director “until he exited the project following a disagreement about format; he envisioned a trilogy, while the studio wanted a single film.” The project resurfaced in 2012, and was a priority for the studio, but there was no real movement, and the film rights reverted back to creators Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra in 2014.

In 2015, FX announced they were going to move forward on a series with Green as showrunner, but then he became committed to American Gods on Starz. However, once he left that show after Season 1, FX snatched him up again, and they appear to be moving foward.

What’s truly great about the information available about this adaptation so far is that there are already so many women involved, and the entire production seems gender balanced, which would make sense for a story like this. In addition to having Croal as co-showrunner, the pilot also has a female director in Insecure‘s Melina Matsoukas. Matsoukas will also be an Executive Producer on the show along with Green, Croal, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, and Vaughan.
