What Is Target’s Return Policy in 2026?

So you bought a $1500 flat screen from Target, and now you’re stricken with buyer’s remorse. Is there any way to lift this purchasing burden from your mind? Yes, just return the thing. It’s a simple solution, but Target’s 2026 return policy has some additional considerations for you to mull over. If your buyer’s regret caused you to lash out at your recent purchase with a 9-iron, odds are you’re not getting your money back. But if your purchase is still in pristine condition, there might just be hope for you yet.
What Does Target Have to Say?
According to the official Target website, most unopened items returned within 90 days of purchase will be eligible for a refund or an exchange. If you bought an item from Target’s website, this return window begins once your package arrives. If the item is opened or damaged, or you’re trying to return it without a reciept, Target may reject the refund request.
Are There Exceptions to This 90 Day Rule?
Yes, some items are easier to return than others. If your item is a Target Owned Brand Item, it can be returned up to a year from the initial purchase. Items purchased with EBT also qualify for the 90-day return rule under SNAP rules. If you have a Target Circle debit or credit card or are a Target Circle 360 member, you’re given an extra 30 days to return your item — 120 days total.
Now the bad news. If you purchased your item internationally, Target is unable to process a return or exchange outside of the country where the purchase was made. Additionally, some items are not eligible to be returned at all. These items include trading cards, opened or unsealed breast pumps, special-edition collectables such as action figures or dolls, and perfumes and fragrances sold by Target Plus Partners. Other items are only eligible for an exchange if opened, not a refund. These items include music, movies, video games, and airbeds — the last of which can be exchanged for a similar item.
Some items have a shorter return/exchange window. Entertainment items and electronics (except for certain Apple products) must be exchanged within 30 days of purchase, and this 30-day window also applies to most items sold by Target Plus Partners. Apple products and mobile phones must be exchanged within 14 days of purchase.
How Do I Make A Return or Exchange?
To make a return or exchange in person, go to Guest Services with your item and a valid receipt, a return barcode, or the credit or debit card used to buy the item. Items purchased online can be returned in the same way.
To make a return online, log in to your Target account. Find your item under Orders on Target.com or Purchases in the Target app, then select Return (store or mail) or Fix an issue (for missing or damaged items). Follow the prompts to request a refund, replacement, or access your return barcode for in-store returns. If you need to mail in the item, Target will provide a free UPS return label and instructions. Include the item, packaging, and accessories, and attach the label and drop the package at an authorized UPS location.
How and When Will I Be Refunded?
Refunds are usually issued to the original payment method you used for your purchase. If you used multiple payment methods, the refund may be split between them. Purchases made with a Target GiftCard are refunded as a new Target eGiftCard. and items paid with PayPal before Sept. 13, 2022 are refunded to a Target GiftCard. If you return an item in-store without a receipt or return barcode, you may receive a merchandise return card instead.
Refunds to a Target Circle Card usually arrive within 2 days. Refunds to third-party credit cards take around 5 days. Refunds sent to the Online Return Center must be inspected first, and then the refund is usually approved 7–10 business days.
The Bottom Line
While exceptions apply, if you bought it at Target and it’s still in good condition, you’re basically guaranteed to qualify for a refund or an exchange. If you’re trying to return it in smashed-up pieces with no receipt, better to save the gas money and stay home.
