Is Timothée Chalamet Secretly EsDeeKid?
Timothee Chalamet has absolutely owned the Marty Supreme rollout, and people are wondering if he’s secretly EsDeeKid. For the uninitiated, the British drill rapper is currently enjoying a hot streak and his gimmick involves some carefully curated anonymity.
Naturally, folks think a (presumably) white boy with this much swagger must be Timmy C. But, is he really EsDeeKid? Jury is still out on that one, but the Dune star did address the rumors head-on this week. Chalamet teased a big reveal of some sort, which sent most of social media into a tizzy.
During an appearance on Heart Breakfast last week, the hosts asked the Marty Supreme actor if he was actually EsDeeKid. Chalamet smirked and said “All will be revealed in due time.” It took the Hollywood star quite a bit to respond to the direct question. Their comments would explode with speculation about what that cryptic hint could possibly mean. Some of them alleged that he really was living a double life, while others expected more promotion. (To be fair to those folks, the Marty Supreme rollout has been a masterclass in hype.)
Now, We’ve got a mildly unexpected development in this saga. Less than an hour ago, EsDeeKid Posted a clip of a remix to his viral hit “4 Raws.” Who else but Marty Supreme himself would roll up and spit a few bars on the remix. A24 is amused in the comments and dropped a “all will be revealed.” So, do we really have an answer here?
Could Timothee Chalamet be EsDeeKid for real?
This is the Internet, so we have to cover our butts and indulge in the very unlikely possibility that the British rapper and Chalamet are the same person. Some of us are old enough to remember another famous Timmy on the Internet being a fabrication in a larger scheme. So, the jury’s still out a bit. (Although it seems unlikely at this point!) Social media is a wild place, and that leads to a culture where speculation drives conversations. You can bet at this moment there are people that are knee deep in a 7 post argument about what this mostly harmless music video means.
In an age of conspiracy, this kind of viral marketing does the job for you. From orange jackets to pingpong ball gumball machines in theaters, the Marty Supreme team has been on it. Chalamet has been all over the world to spread the word about this movie. This EsDeeKid thing is more or less a sidequest that got folded into the main questline for the young actor. It’s got to be fun to be able to cosplay a rapper for a little bit and then hop back into your A24 campaign. The tonal whiplash from all of it is enough to make you want to lie down.
What does it all mean?
One thing is for sure, none of this “4 Raws” remix video business is going to quiet the speculation anytime soon. Chalamet is now going to answer questions about this particular video on the press tour. Keep in mind that we did not see the rapper’s face, so the mystery continues. As a piece of strange Internet era marketing? Oh, a home run! (Or is it an overhand smash?)
Undoubtedly, a success for everyone involved. Music obsessives are probably aware of EsDeeKid’s rise, but there are legions of normies out there getting introduced to the man in black through all of this crossover business. Remember folks, it’s a business, man, and he’s a business man. But, seriously, if this man ends up being a fake British rappser, we need to start a dialogue.
