Threads Is Worth It, Only For Christina Ricci Taking People to Task

Christina Ricci as Val in '200 Cigarettes'

I don’t use Threads, but I’m slightly convinced after seeing Christina Ricci’s clapbacks against random social media users. They’re nothing short of savage, but sometimes, a teardown from Christian Ricci is much needed for a wake-up call.

There’s a conservative fear of large women with nose rings and bleached hair. It’s a prevailing stereotype—that liberal women are less attractive. This Threads user wrote, “Post pilates because fat chicks vote democrat.”

It’s a lowball insult—and while I think it’s the right thing to roll my eyes and move on from that brainless assumption, Ricci thinks otherwise. She wrote in reply, “I’m skinnier than you you asshole and I still vote democrat or as liberal as I can because there’s more to life than being thin. What you contribute to this world is what matters, loser.”

It’s petty, but if Y2K icon Christina Ricci were in my replies and called me a loser? I’d take the L and put my account on private until everything blows over.

Another Threads user expressed, “If your boyfriend’s a liberal, he’s not your boyfriend. He’s your girlfriend. Liberal men have low testosterone. I said what I said.”

Because apparently, political beliefs define masculinity? Again, none of that makes sense—unless this person’s definition of it involves men hell-bent on smoking their lungs out with cheap cigars and screaming at a microphone for a living.

Ricci replied, “Wow that giant thing between his legs sure look like a dick to me.”

Taylor Swift, move over—everything we know about Travis Kelce is against our will. But now, thanks to Christina Ricci, we are well aware of her husband’s size as well. At least it was for a good cause? Regardless, it’s a jaw-dropping response—one that would prompt me to close my (non-existent) Threads account forever.

The same Threads user, however, has a stomach built for pain. She would also post, “The highest calling for a woman is not to be a the president, CEO, boss lady. It’s to be a godly wife and mother.”

Sure! Because women are not human and can’t have ambitions and aspirations outside of the home. I get it. That’s sarcasm on my end—but unfortunately not for that Threads user. I may have fumed there for a bit, but Ricci provided the simplest, and yet most effective, response against that sexist comment: “Fuck off.”

But just when I thought it was over with, the same Threads user came up with another statement. She wrote, “Being a sane, not raging feminist on this insanely liberal app is not for the weak.”

Apparently, promoting condemning women’s rights is the sane take. That’s rich, coming from a Threads user who appears to be a woman. But Ricci replied, “Then bow out. We don’t want you here.”

There’s a lot of hateful rhetoric from conservatives—oftentimes, undermining a woman’s role and place in society. Since Republicans took power, a lot of these conservatives have become bolder in their mockery of women—especially liberal women, who don’t align with their dystopian, Atwood-esque view of the world. Words translate to policy at the highest level, favoring the culture that is dominant. In a world where women are often used as the butt of online attacks, it’s refreshing to see an icon bite back.

So, wherever Christina Ricci is right now, thank you for speaking up. I hope your pillow perpetually stays cold.
