This year’s bad take on ‘When Harry Met Sally’ is here

Meg Ryan as Sally Albright and Billy Crystal as Harry Burns in 'When Harry Met Sally'

Every year, a new generation of people experience the magic of When Harry Met Sally. It doesn’t always go well though. Like this most recent “hot take” about the Rob Reiner film.

When Harry Met Sally was released in 1989 and has since been labeled as one of the best romantic comedies of all time. Each fall/winter, we all turn to the film because it does have a very specific feel to it. Maybe it is the cover with fallen leaves all over it or maybe it is the New Year’s Eve confession but we love to revisit Harry and Sally’s love story this time of year.

Meg Ryan plays Sally, who meets Harry (Billy Crystal) as the two are driving from school together. It begins a friendship that has many questioning whether men and women can be friends with each other. While the film doesn’t prove the naysayers wrong, it has become a classic for a reason. That means that sometimes we see some hot takes about it that are kind of wild.

A film account posted pictures of the film on X and one user quote tweeted the post and wrote the following. “This could be a great film if either of them were attractive.” Let that sink in. They are talking about MEG RYAN and BILLY CRYSTAL in the 80s. That includes Sally’s iconic 80s looks as well as Crystal’s sweater!

My favorite response is the person who just replied with an image of Kendall Roy from Succession that says “Bad tweet! Bad tweet! Bad tweet!”

This isn’t even about the movie?!

Let’s pretend we are this person who doesn’t get the appeal of Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Even if you weren’t attracted to either of them, the story of their love should be enough to make you feel something. You should need to think someone is hot or attractive in order to connect with a story.

Yes, that’s part of the Hollywood of it all but besides that, there are actors out there that people don’t “get” when it comes to looks and they manage just fine watching them in movies. In this case, I don’t necessarily agree with the OP on their assessment of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan but even if I did, I would still relate to and understand what the movie is telling me.

It isn’t surprising at this point that people want to take on the classics. We live in a world where if something is deemed “good,” someone will show up with something to say about it. But what has been great about new people discovering movies like When Harry Met Sally is that it has made many long for more romantic comedies.

That being said, When Harry Met Sally is a great film. Despite whether or not you think either of the stars are attractive.
