Steven Spielberg is back with a first look at his new film!

Steven Spielberg is one of the few directors whose reputation truly precedes him. The man has been responsible for decades of classic films spanning genres and ratings and time periods… and now, he’s back in a major way.
On Tuesday, Universal Pictures released the first teaser trailer for Spielberg’s new film, which we now know is called Disclosure Day. The project, which will be released on June 12, 2026, boasts an ensemble cast that includes Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell.
Disclosure Day has had a ton of mystery surrounding it for months now, to the point where we didn’t even really know its title until this teaser dropped. Would it be called The Dish? Would it be a stealth sequel to Spielberg’s 1977 classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind? And how exactly do the birds that are all over the marketing factor into the film?
Just based on this teaser for Disclosure Day, we really don’t have a clear answer to any of those questions. And honestly, that’s great. The notion of Spielberg circling back around to the science fiction space, much less with his own original story idea, was already enough to keep me intrigued. He arguably hasn’t played in that arena since his 2018 adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, and even then, that was adapting an existing text instead of coming up with something entirely new.
Let him cook!
Spielberg has proven, time and time again, that he can make magic in that realm: with the aforementioned Close Encounters, but also with E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Minority Report, and War of the Worlds. The idea of him having even more to say in that field, especially in our modern landscape where true science fiction has given way to larger franchises that are also other things, is intriguing in and of itself. The fact that one of Spielberg’s frequent collaborators, David Koepp, is at the helm of turning that story into a full script is also exciting.
The trailer showcases just enough of that sci-fi vibe while still leaving its specifics a surprise. Why is Blunt’s news anchor character making weird clicking noises on television? What is Firth’s character’s role in the government, and how are they involved with fighting whatever is at the center of the film? How is the topic of spirituality weaved into that, as evident by the scenes with O’Connor’s character? (Between this and the recently-released Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, he is on a roll lately with religious characters.)
We currently have no way of knowing… and there’s a beauty in that. After he essentially coined the concept of a blockbuster movie decades ago, I’m excited to see exactly what Spielberg cooks in this modern blockbuster space. I also wouldn’t be surprised if his recent string of more intimate films — West Side Story, and most recently The Fablemans — influence his approach to Disclosure Day as well. Either way, I can’t wait to sit down in the local multiplex next summer to find out.
Disclosure Day will be released exclusively in theaters on June 12, 2026.
