Woman’s Ryanair flight gets delayed for so long, she ends up joining a stranger’s gender reveal: ‘Do you get to be a godmother now?’

Gender reveals are usually one of two things: a relaxed occasion to reconnect with family or an uncomfortable day filled with awkward expectations. For one Ryanair passenger, it was neither: She didn’t know the mother or the father involved, and she didn’t have any expectations to place on their child.

Becca Louise Fisher (@beccalouisefisher) posted a video about a gender reveal she was invited to on TikTok. Except she wasn’t invited to the gender reveal by mail or even by text. She happened to be on such an extended layover with Ryanair that she ended up joining one.

How did she get involved in a gender reveal?

Fisher was taking a trip with Ryanair when her flight got unexpectedly delayed. That meant the TikToker was stuck on the ground in her passenger seat. But luckily, she had a number of seatmates to chat with.

A couple, whom Fisher didn’t know, ended up approaching her and some of the other passengers. They came bearing gifts—cupcakes with frosting inserted in them to match their baby’s gender—which they apparently had way too many of.

As Fisher explained, “They were flying to see a friend and were revealing the gender to her on the trip. They asked if anyone in our section wanted a cupcake because they had loads and I was the only one who said yes.”

Why was the flight delayed?

While it’s unclear why Ryanair delayed the flight, it’s likely the delay was not deliberate or a simple, inconsequential fix.

Ryanair, like most airlines, prefers not to keep customers on the ground. In Europe, if a delay lasts longer than two hours, the airline is obligated to provide meals, refreshments and service that’s roughly equivalent to the expected wait time. Additionally, most European airlines have to provide compensation for longer delays

Fisher also did not clarify just how long she was sitting on the tarmac with her other passengers. Unlike U.S. air regulations, European carriers don’t have a specific, regulated “limit” for wait times on aicraft, but they do expect airliners to give passengers options to leave the aircraft after a reasonable amount of time has passed.

What was the gender?

Before the content creator took a bite of the cupcake, she reminded the other passengers of what gender she thought the baby would be. “Ready? I said, I said girl. OK. I said girl,” Fisher said.

Then, she took a bite of the dessert. Fisher immediately brought her hand to her face out of shock. The TikToker held the cupcake up toward her camera, which revealed blue—not pink—frosting.

Fisher later joked, “Can’t believe I was happy about it being a boy tbh.” All around, the situation was a bright spot and fun “side quest” that may have cheered up quite a few delayed passengers.
