Despite ‘Project Hail Mary’s Success, Ryan Gosling Really, Really Does Not Want to Go to Space

If you’ve even passively been aware of the movie world this past month, you’ve probably heard a lot about Project Hail Mary. The film adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel is not only breaking box office records and making people fall in love with a rock-shaped alien, but has further made people appreciate its star and producer, Ryan Gosling.

It’s gotten to the point where Gosling and Project Hail Mary have been throughout the conversation surrounding the real-life Artemis II space launch, which sent U.S. astronauts to the moon last week. But along the way, one thing has become hilariously and abundantly clear: Gosling does not want to be among the stars himself.

In an interview with Capital Official while at the Project Hail Mary premiere, Gosling was asked what objects he would bring with him in space. With an increasing amount of worry on his face, Gosling answered: “Well, I wouldn’t go to space. Just like, never. I would run. Why do I have to? I don’t want to go. Just to be clear. Why are you sending me?”

Another clip of Gosling talking to Yahoo! Entertainment has also gone viral, in which he very bluntly says: “No, never. God, no. I like to pretend to go to space.”

The clips have gone viral, in part because of the honesty of his answer, and because of how ironic it is when juxtaposed with the wonder and scale of Project Hail Mary. As those who have read the book and seen the movie have joked, it’s almost as if Gosling is worried that he’s going to suffer the same fate as his character in the film, Ryland Grace. As Twitter user @filmbitten put it: “im starting to think ryan gosling is legitimately worried about being knocked unconscious and sent to space against his will.”

“Why would I do that?”

There even been comparisons between Gosling and Taylor Swift, who answered a similar sort of question in an exasperated way while promoting her album The Life of a Showgirl last fall. I kid you not, just this morning, I happened to see a TikTok fan edit mashing up their two answers.

“Never!” Swift answered to The Scott Mills Breakfast Show. “Why would I do that? There’s no reason to do that. I don’t want to do that, ever. I never … oh my God, no! …It’s cold, it’s scary, I don’t know if I can come back down. If I go, no one will believe I went. It doesn’t matter if you go, because everyone thinks you didn’t go, or they have a weird take on it. I have no fascination. But thank you for asking! I don’t know why I just completely freaked out, it was like I thought you were going to make me go.”

While Gosling might not be physically going into space, he has still played a surprising role in the Artemis II launch. Gosling recorded a video message for the astronauts prior to their launch last week, which was then followed up by a message from his alien co-star, Rocky. The crew were even asked about Gosling and Project Hail Mary this past weekend, revealing that they watched the film while in quarantine before launch. The whole thing has been very wholesome… and at least Gosling doesn’t have to leave the ground to play a part in it.
